Like every Scion vehicle, iQ comes equipped with Scion's Star Safety System™ — an integration of six active safety features, each designed to enhance brake function and increase driver control to help prevent accidents. But that's just the beginning. iQ is jam-packed with safety innovations, like the World's first integrated headrests and a best-in-class 11 standard airbags.
Scion custom engineered the Driver and Front Passenger bucket seats for the iQ. The result is thinner, lightweight seats and the introduction of Integrated Headrests — enabling iQ to maximize available passenger room without sacrificing safety.

Complementing Scion's Star Safety System™ are passive safety systems to help protect you in the event of a collision. iQ literally surrounds you in a cushion of safety with a class-leading 11 Standard Airbags, including: The World's first Driver Seat Cushion Airbag, which works with the seatbelt to reduce impact to the head, chest and upper body. The first Rear Window (Hatch) Curtain Airbag to protect rear passengers when hit from behind. And 9 more airbags adding protection in the front, the seat-sides, the side windows and the knees. Don't worry — iQ has you covered.
Designed for safety. In addition to the impact absorbing body structure and highly rigid cabin, several of iQ's edgier design features aim to enhance vehicle safety. The wheels are positioned at each corner of the short and wide body, to not only achieve a sturdy and solid structure that maximizes driving responsiveness, but also to absorb impact in the event of a collision.
iQ's Star Safety System™ integrates technologies that can help the driver maintain control in adverse or emergency conditions. These include: Enhanced VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), TRAC (TRAction Control) and the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) with EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution). These features, along with Brake Assist and Smart Stop Technology are standard equipment with every 2012 Scion vehicle.
Scion wants you to transport your young passengers with confidence, so we've added two Anchor Points for Child Restraint Seats in the rear of the vehicle.

All 2011 Scion models come standard with Scion's Star Safety System™.
This integration of our six active safety features is designed to protect occupants by helping drivers avoid accidents in the first place.
The Star Safety System™ includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Smart Stop Technology (SST).
As an added measure of safety, Scion created the braking system enhancement known as Smart Stop Technology. This advanced technology automatically cuts engine power and allows the brakes to take precedence over the accelerator when both pedals are pressed at the same time.
Smart Stop Technology intervenes when the accelerator is depressed first (Figure 1) and the brakes are applied firmly for longer than one-half second at speeds greater than eight kilometres per hour. (Figure 2)
In normal driving conditions, you won't notice Smart Stop Technology as it is imperceptible. The feature doesn't engage if the brake pedal is depressed before the accelerator pedal. This allows for vehicles starting on a steep hill to safety accelerate without rolling backward (known as hill start).
